Amelia Earhart begins her historic flight across the Atlantic in Newfoundland.

Earhart takes off in her red Lockheed Vega from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. She becomes the first woman and second person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean when he lands on a farm in Londonderry, Northern Ireland (rather than Paris, her intended destination) because of poor weather conditions, 15 hours later on May 21, 1932.
